Tall Oaks show by Reka Saturday 29th of March

Here's a preview of brand new work from Reka's upcoming show at China Heights on the 29th. Named Tall Oaks this show sees a dramatic change in Reka's approach, deviating from the form that has made him one of Australia's most notorious artists and taking on a more abstract fantasy path with a dope new style and a cheesy new grin

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tall Oaks will be only exhibiting for the weekend, 29th - 30th of March. So make sure you have it free.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Who are you & what do you do?

ears. street art/photography.

Who are your favorite artists?

lister/kill pixie/yok/kinsey/jeff soto/reka and swoon

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Do you think Sydney keeps its own among the other graff scenes?
yeah definately, although graffiti as a culture focussed on crime and crew politics seems to have less of a presence in sydney these days, i think things are definately changing for the better.

Any exhibitions we need to know of?

movement show coming up at pine st. keep your ears open.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Do you thing there is a big gap between graffiti & street art in Sydney?

probably alot more in sydney than in melbourne, yeah for sure. In melbourne it seems as though the line is blurred and you find alot of graffiti writers will also do stickers/stencils/pasteups, being into all aspects of illegal art.
I guess its a case of fighting for space and recognition in sydney, street art is still finding its feet all the street artists i know are motivated by creating imaginative character based work and focussing on pushing the art more than how much they are getting up, like just bombing etc. So the street artists are seperating themselves from graffiti just by not doing pieces and throwups. Instead its about pasteups/ stickers and just painting walls.
But i think we will see more graff artists start to take and interest and dabble in street art aswell which can only be a healthy thing for the scene, i think Jota is one of the few graff writers who does this well, he has one foot firmly in each camp and holds his ground.

What’s in your cd player right now?

The Pogues

Who is coming up in Sydney we should look out for?

I think max berry is going to freak some people out with his creativity and querkyness, his shits getting real tight right now, and he has the fire in his belly to keep pushing.

Spit Syndicate Interview

What up peeps?
Caught up with my man Nick Lupi from Sydney's mighty Spit Syndicate yesterday for a chin wag about their up coming album, getting a deal from Australia's biggest Hip-Hop label & his travels through Europe.
Blat blat!
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

What up Mr. Lupi? How things?

Whats crackin brother - everything's gravy. Making a few final changes to our album, working to a deadline for the first time which is proving a little stressful but it ain't nothing to a boss.

You just returned home after 3 months away. How was your travels?

Travelling was real fucking cool - had some amazing experiences and met some cool people. It's good to be back home but all I can think about is hitting the road again, travelling some more.

Where did you go?

All throughout Europe (which was expensive as hell - but dope) - my favourite places were Barcelona, Berlin, all of Italy and Marrakech in Morocco.

Did you colab with any internationals while tripping around?

Me and my man Solo did a song when we were in Paris with a good friend of mine, a French rapper by the name of Octa, who I met when he was working in Australia a couple years back. He showed us around Paris and we hit the stu when we were over there.

Congratulations on the deal with Obese. Tell us how that came about?

Cheers matey. Well, right from the jump we decided that we wanted to build a name for ourselves and write, fund and record a full album on our own terms before we started thinking about a label. We shopped ourselves to some labels and we had a few options on the table, but yeah we ended up rolling with Obese. Pegz and the rest of the staff at Obese know what they're doing and they do it damn well - it was a big decision for us but we were stoked that it came through.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

So what can you tell me about the up coming album?

The album is called Towards the Light, and it's dropping in May. We worked with some well-known Australian producers on there, including dudes like M-Phazes, Kaos, Jase and Suffa from the Hilltops - those are probably some of the top beat-makers in the country so we're stoked that they blessed us. We also worked with our lesser-known homies Merlot Nelson, who is a one-man musical genius that we often hit the Beach with, and Made in Japan - who are an up-and-coming indie band from the Inner West of Sydney, our area. The album doesn't have a great deal of features - we've got a young Sydney MC by the name of Solo, from Horrorshow, on a few of the songs and of course our motherfucking man Fame. There are a lot of guest vocalists but they're more lacing us with chorus vocals rather than verses. You'll have to check it out man, I hope you dig it.

The last few times I have seen you guys you have been playing with a live band that just seems to get bigger & bigger. Are you planning on always rocking live with a band?

We played with a live band in November for a show we did at Spectrum and it was hands-down the best show we've ever played. The band is actually made up of Made In Japan, our indie-rock mates, and Merlot Nelson, the big fella on keys. We don't have plans to play with a band every show that we do - we'll just take it as it comes and see how it all works out. Playing with those dudes takes our show to a whole 'nother level though.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

When can we see you next?

We're playing at the Pegz and Chasm show on the 29th March at Manning Bar in Sydney - Vents and Trials are also playing that gig and I think it should be pretty killer. We will also be hitting some major capital cities round the country for a tour in May but I'll let you know more information on that when I have it!

Who is coming up in Sydney we should be looking out for?

One word - Horrorshow. They're our close friends and they're incredible. A very well-kept secret in Sydney hip-hop, but they're gonna explode in 08. Mark my words bro, check em out here: www.myspace.com/horrorshowcrew

Any shout outs?

Shout outs to Horrorshow, Made in Japan and Merlot Nelson. And Petersham Charcoal Chicken. Thanks for the interview as well player, take care of yourself.

C: I guess it took about 6-8 months to put together from start to finish, a couple of the beats were a bit older but most on the album were made within the last year. After the Astronomy Class album and tours wound down I just started making a whole load of new shit.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

New Video & interview from The Tongue

I caught up with one of the most talented artists on the Sydney Hip-Hop scene The Tongue for a brief chat about his new video & the year ahead. Check it out . . .

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Keep moving: Hello guvna, how you loving this weather?

The Tongue: I'm a summer man, I love the heat, so to be honest I'm a bit gutted about the weather. Its never hot enough for long enough if you ask me.

KM: Big ups on the new video I must say one of the most original & impressive local hip-hop videos I have seen. Who made it?

TT: All the credit for the clip should really go to its director Lorin Askill. I explained the idea to him one afternoon and he just executed the concept perfectly. He even made all the puppets himself! A good director is like a magician and Lorin has a lot of tricks up his sleeve...

KM: This is only your second music video to date & I can already see a Tongue box set down the line. Do you have a big input into what comes out the other end?

TT: The ideas for the filmclips have both been mine so far but, you know, a good concept can still come across badly if handled in an amateur way. Thats why I only work with the best directors- Luke Mazzaferro (who did "The Punch" filmclip) and Lorin- did these jobs out of passsion, not for the cash, and I've been stoked with the results. They are both going to go a long way.

KM: Do you have any pets?

TT: Not personally but my folks have a 'labradoodle' (half labrador, half poodle) named Marquez. He's one cute motherfucker.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

KM: You just finished up playing at Good vibrations & ripping the big day out, which did you prefer?

TT: Both were banging gigs...ones headlined by Rage Against The Machine and the other by Kanye West....so I just felt lucky to be involved in something like that.

KM: What does 2008 hold in store for you? Any new music, tours?

TT: I hope to do another national tour for my album "Shock And Awe" before too long but thats still being organised. My label-mates The Herd have a new record dropping in April so I reckon I'll be doing a few supports on their tour as well.

Other than that I've been bugging the people at Elefant Traks to put out a DVD for ages, and I've put my hand-up to get it all together for release later this year. So thats the other project I'm focusing on right now.

As for music- the next Tongue album will be dropping in early 2009. Its gonna be the big one!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

KM: What is in your Cd player right now?

TT: Chasm's "Beyond The Beat Tape"
Groove Armada's "Soundboy Rock"
Lil Wayne's "The Dedication 2"
Nick Caves "Dig Lazarus Dig!"

KM: Who is coming up in Sydney for keep moving to watch out for?

TT: Malcolm Turnbull. Watch out for him. Hes a prick.

KM: Any shout outs?

TT: Big ups to anyone who has supported me and my music- I got mad love for ya. Special shout out to my homies at Elefant Traks and Obese....if you havn't copped Chasm's new record then go do that asap. Big ups to the people of Australia for kicking Howard out on his arse...heres to a happy and healthy 2008! Jah bless!

KM: Thanks for your time dude, really appreciate it, best of luck with the
future.
